Arrojadoa
|
|
These cacti live in Brasil, that is in the tropical area. They are cereoid or of elongated stems (rather thin, 1-2 cm diameter), nor ball-shaped. Very interesting part of their anatomy is a multiple cephalium. Cephalium is a stem part that has been covered by thick wool and bristles, from where flowers emerge. Most cephalium bearing cacti have only one such thing per stem, while Arrojadoa makes one every year on the peak of the stem. Next year the stem keeps growing upwards from the cephalium point and makes a new cephalium on this year’s peak. Flowers appear from both! The flowers are also interesting, small, but very colourful (pink, red, orange, sometimes bi-coloured), their petals looking wax-made. Cultivation is simple if one remembers of the tropical origin, in other words of keeping them in winter in 12°C at least. |
