Lobivia
|
|
Another South American star! This group has been merged in Echinopsis which has probably been a right thing to do. Nevertheless it is confusing because Lobivias are mountain species and Echinopsis not very much so. This implies different ways of growing both groups. Although the name Lobivia is an anagram of Bolivia, the plants live also in Argentina and Peru. These small plants give birth to big flowers of astounding colour range that unfortunately open only for a few hours and almost never open again next day. It is worth waiting for the few hours though. They should be provided with very porous mineral “soil” and be watered thoroughly but, say, twice a month (young seedlings more often of course). They need all the sun there is. They feel best in the open air (no greenhouse) with some protection against rain. Night light frosts do not harm them in the least. Winter them like Rebutias, i.e. in the light and very cold (0–5°C is best). |
